The Dominican habit consists of a white tunic, a belt with a rosary attached, a white scapular, a black veil, and a black cappa. It is a sign of our baptismal and religious consecrations with their radical renunciations. In a visible way it expresses all that we have been called from - the death of sin (the color black) - and all that we have been called toward - the intensification of our graced life in Christ (the color white). Symbolizing the way of life we profess, its cloth, colors and cut express not only poverty, chastity and obedience, but simplicity of life, innocence, perseverance and separation from worldly society. The habit also gives us hope by reminding us of all our Dominican Saints, our forebears in the Order who are rejoicing now in the Kingdom.
